In 1994, government scientists created Somna-7, a chemical that distills human dreams into a physical substance called Essence.
Paleview was secretly chosen for a large-scale experiment. It went catastrophically wrong, and the entire town vanished.
Later, they discovered that Paleview had been carried into the plane of dreams, where its residents were gone, nightmares roamed the streets, and enormous quantities of Essence remained.
Somatek Corporation developed a way to cross between worlds, called Drifting. Now they're recruiting Drifters to recover Essence and find a way to save the town.
